S-MAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks
Xue Ping Jiang · ZTE communications · 2007
As sensor nodes are energy limited, saving energy is the primary issue in designing Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols in sensor networks. The Sensor Medium Access Control (S-MAC) protocol is developed to improve the network energy efficiency and latency performance through the periodical sleep, adaptive listening, crosstalk rejection, and message passing mechanisms. The S-MAC protocol can achieve better performance by allowing dynamic scheduling, and sending control and data packets under different transmission conditions. For the wireless sensor network, it's impractical to design a MAC protocol that will meet all the requirements. Varied approaches should be taken in designing the protocols that meet different applications' requirements.
