A novel method to identify the single phase-to-earth fault in a Neutral Un-effectual Grounded System (NUGS) is proposed on the basis of analyzing the feeder selecting algorithm using zero-sequence admittance. By virtue of the compensation, the discrimination between the fault feeder and sound feeder can be highlighted, and the setting of the criterion therefore becomes feasible. Considering the on-site requirement to the protection, the susceptance error and phase angle of the compensated admittance are integrated as a novel algorithm of single phase-to-earth fault of NUGS. The results of simulation using ATP demonstrate that this algorithm is immune to the variation of network structures and parameters, fault conditions, and fault resistance etc. The successful rate of feeder selection is proved to be improved to a great extent.
