To increase spectrum utilization, cognitive radio allows secondary users(SUs) to exploit instantaneous spectrum holes while limiting interference to primary users(PUs).A key problem is to discover the spectrum holes in a timely and efficient manner, especially for multi-channel cognitive radio networks. The probability of a channel state change was used to develop a dynamic intuitive spectrum sensing policy for one SU overlaying a continuous time Markov chain(CTMC) modeled multi-channel primary network. The effect of the sensing period is also considered.Simulations show that for a suitable sensing period, the SU can effectively discover and utilize spectrum holes and consume less energy for sensing than random and periodic sensing policies.
