Serial-based management solutions are widely used in server environments today. However, the point-to-point nature of this solution is best suited for managing a single server rather than a group or rack of servers. To solve this problem, a virtual remote serial terminal(Serial Over Lan Terminal, SOLTerm) based on IPMI ( Intelligent Platform Management Interface) is introduced. This vitual terminal is designed based on the new feature SOL presented in IPMI v2. 0. Through SOLTerm, administrator can access the serial port of the remote server everywhere in the LAN. It provide a text - based remote console for setting BIOS, operating systems, and networks. It reduces large cost of Severs Management, while providing a convenient way for Administration.
