Fast fractional pel motion estimation algorithm based on H.264

This paper presented a fast algorithm based on highly correlation of motion estimation cost and motion vector direction for H.264.The new algorithm explored the most probable half-pel positions and abandoned the less probable ones.Then,it applied diamond search to the minimum half-pel to get the best quarter-pel.The new algorithm only examined 7 search points instead of 16 search points in the search algorithm of reference software.The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm reduced about 56.3% of computation complexity compared to that in reference software but with nearly no peak signal noise rate(PSNR) degradation and bit rate increase.
