Study on MAC protocol to improve voice capacity in WLAN

Lin Xiao-kan · Microcomputer Information · 2008

Current WLAN is still predominantly data centric,so it is not well equipped to meet the pressing voice capacity and quality of service(QoS) demands when transmitting VoIP traffic. This paper investigates the influence factors on voice transmission capacity and finds that the access point(AP) is the network bottleneck by both theoretical analysis and simulations. To alleviate the transmission pressure of AP and mitigate its bottleneck effect,an enhanced MAC protocol called AP priority dynamically adjusting algorithm is proposed. The main idea of the algorithm is to endow the AP higher priority for transmission when its queue is too long.Simulation results indicate that medium access delay is reduced by 60% and voice capacity is enhanced by 20%.
