An Analysis of the Performance Characteristic of TCP Based on Simulation

Zhongcheng Li · Microelectronics & Computer · 2003

The stability of TCP has direct effect on the perfor-mance of network applications. Through loading different classes of services (i.e. FTP service and self-similar service) on TCP, this paper analyzes the stability of TCP, the global synchronization of TCP connections and the effect of adjusting parameters of RED on the performance of TCP. The data of experiments show that the increasing of bandwidth is only one of the factors that affect the stability of TCP. The difference of service classes has direct effect on the stability of TCP. The using of RED or TD has not significant effect on the stability of TCP. This paper further stud-ies the relationship between the characteristics of services and the global synchronization of TCP connections. By adjusting the two main parameters (i.e. and) of RED, the experiment shows their less significant effect on the performance of TCP.
