The traditional GIS lack theories and methods in multi-scale processing of spatial data.A new generation of GIS should have the capabilities of multi-scale,multi-resolution expression and application of geographic objects. The emergence of Global Subdivision Grid(GSG) offers a new insight for multi-scale encoding and the expression of geographic objects.Based on GSG,a new multi-scale expression oriented subdivisional encoding method is proposed, aiming to give the geographic object an integrated subdivisional code, which has geographical meaning as well as multi-scale feature.Experimental results demonstrate that subdivisional code based on GSG can efficiently organize and management geographic objects, and therefore can be utilized for the multi-scale expression of geographic objects.
