A Functional-cognitive Approach to the Analysis of Metadiscourse Meaning and Functions
Ning Yin · Journal of Northeast Normal University · 2013
Issues about the definition, defining principle, classification pattern, functional boundary and status of metadiscourse have always been controversial over the past decades. From the cognitive-functional perspective,it is concluded that some metadiscourse markers perform ideational function together with interpersonal and textual functions.Meanwhile, there is no overlap between interpersonal and textual functions in that the former is external and the latter is internal, therefore, they are not on the same level. Thus,it is suggested that the status of metadiscourse should be reconsidered.Metadiscourse is not additional devices to enhance textual effect, but the internal need of discourses restricted to a particular context.
