FAST MODE DECISION METHOD BASED ON MODE GROUPING FOR H.264/AVC
NL Waste, Vlsi Lab · Computer Applications and Software · 2008
An approach is presented to speed up the mode decision process in a H.264/AVC encoder. The distribution of the encoding modes adopted finally in a frame is analyzed, and all the encoding modes are divided into several subsets.Based on the mode distribution of the previous frame,in the current frame only the modes in a proper subset are selected for the encoding process.Meanwhile, all the encoding modes are activated when scene change occurs, and a scheme for scene change detection is proposed. The simulation results show that compared with the original encoder, the proposed method achieves a reduction of 48%～66% encoding time and keeps almost the same PSNR and bit rate.
