Ethernet MTU and IP SAN Storage System Performance

Zhu Mingfa · Jisuanji gongcheng · 2005

IP SAN based networking storage technology mainly employs iSCSI. iSCSI runs on inexpensive high speed Ethernet. The MTU of Ethern affects the performance of high speed network greatly. In order to improve transmission performance, Jumbo frame which can accommodate more tha 9000 bytes is put forward. This paper studies the relation between MTU and iSCSI performance. In this paper, the performance of iSCSI under norm MTU and Jumbo frame are tested respectively, and the result is compared and analyzed, finally a conclusion is drawn: increasing MTU of Ethernet is a effective means to promote iSCSI performance, it can lower CPU utilization, and increase read-write bandwidth, especially when transferring a bulk of data.
