In order to explore the characteristics of electromagnetic waves(EM-waves)which were excited by partial discharge in gas insulated switchgear(GIS),the model for analyzing the characteristics of PD signals in GIS is established and simulated by using finite difference time domain(FDTD)method. The characteristics of distribution of EM-wave modes which were excited by partial discharge in GIS and the relationship between EM-wave modes and PD source were emphatically analyzed.Firstly, the characteristics of EM-wave modes distribution in GIS were researched.Secondly, the relationship between PD source and EM-wave modes were studied by changing the parameters of PD sources. The simulation results show that TE11(0°),TE21(0°)and TE31(0°)are the dominant components of the corresponding high order mode,so it can be concluded that the EM-wave signals at the positions of φ=0° and φ=180° are the strongest. The EM-wave modes of PD signal in GIS are related with the PD pulse waveform, the location of PD source and the length of PD channels.
