The Flexibility And the Rigidity in Constructing a Coordinate Structure

Yichun Zhang · 2005

The flexibility in constructing a coordinate structure makes coordinate elements optional — the presence of only one element is enough to make the sentence complete in form; While the rigidity of a coordinate structure makes the elements bound together — the presence of only one makes the sentence incomplete in form. The rigid nature can be found in the following two cases: one is that the relevant elements are bound and fixed due to habit or phonic reasons; the other is that the elements are inseparable for semantic reasons or for the sake of making a full sentence.
