Prevention of 220 kV Circuit Breaker Damage Due to Multiple Lightning Strikes

Zhou Kai-feng · Gaoya dianqi · 2012

When a 220 kV transmission line is struck by lightning, lightning waves intrude into 220 kV substation to break down the insulation of 220 kV circuit breaker. Therefore,we suggest to conduct the combined test of lightning impulse voltage and anti-polarity power frequency voltage for 110 kV and 220 kV SF_6 circuit breakers, and equipped the substations in strong lightning area with lightning arresters on outlet terminals of 110 kV and 220 kV overhead transmission lines. These lightning arresters can prevent internal and external flashover at fracture, and can protect other electrical equipments on the bus to significantly reduce the danger of lightning.
