Building a clusterwith commodity SMPs is very attractive as it reduces the costof network interfaces per processor. However,to efficiently manage such a cluster of SMPs(CLUMPs),the communication layer needs to provide a multi-protocol support, thereby allowing a process to simultaneously send a message to another process on the same physical node or to send a message via the network. Therefore,It is necessary to develop a low-level message passing protocol to provide intra and inter-node communication performance,in terms of latency and bandwidth,as close as possible to commodity hardware limits. This is designed and implemented in our protocol via the cluster ziqiang 2000 of shanghai university running linux. The software characteristics of our design are presented. Then, the im-plementation of our multi-protocol and the original mech-anism to implement high performance message passing inside an SMP node is explained. At last the traditional TCP/IP protocol and the share memory ptotocol is compared communicated inside an SMP node.
