A Quick-start Mechanism for TCP

Deyou Tang · Jisuanji gongcheng · 2004

This paper introduces an optional quick-start mechanism for the underutilized network. It determines the initial sending rate or initial congestion window at the start of a data transfer based on the utilization of the network. Quick-start is designed to allow TCP connections to use high initial sending rate in the circumstances where there is significant unused bandwidth along the path, and every routers along the path support the quick-start request. Firstly, this paper introduces the traditional slow-start and the main idea of the quick-start. Then it focuses on the implementation of quick-start in TCP and IP, especially the problem of source allocation on IP layer. At last, it compares quick-start with slow-start in ns2.
