Transparent bridge, trunk, router on stick, and VLAN are the major methods of interconnecting 2-layer switch and 3-layer switches, but this interconnecting depends on whether they conform identical standard or not. IEEE Std. 802.1Q is such a standard for virtual local area network interconnecting.
