Server Consolidation and Grid Computing: Performance Implications.

Yiping Ding, Kenneth Newman · 2003

Server consolidation and grid computing are two very different, almost opposite, approaches for addressing system availability and performance issues. The server consolidation process focuses on reducing the physical number of computers and moving the workloads/applications running on them to a smaller set of computers. Grid computing, on the other hand, tries to utilize the existing computer infrastructure and make idle cycles available to other users. This paper examines the performance implications and modeling aspects of these approaches. 1.
