Blocking artifacts are the result of block-based discrete cosine transform in JPEG coding.A new method to measure the artifacts is presented in this paper.First of all, according to the luminance distribution, every 8 ×8 JPEG image block was determined as one of four distortions:most severe, severe, slightly blocking, and undistorted ones.Secondly, the ratio of each kind of distorted image block was calculated in order to establish the relationship between each kind of image block and the image mean opinion score(MOS).Finally, the model of JPEG image blocking evaluation was obtained by Regress analysis. In the experiment,JPEG images were tested on public image database LIVE,and the results show that the method has good correlation with MOS,and is simple to calculate and implement.
