A novel objective quality evaluation algorithm for enhanced images is presented. The proposed algorithm comprehensively considers the effects of local area average brightness of the background and space complexity on visual resolution. In order to judge whether the variance of gray is effectively percepted or not,the just noticeable difference(JND) is derived. The changes in the number of perceptible pixels between the original image and the enhanced image can be calculated by use of JND parameter. Thus quantitative results to assess the quality of enhanced images are obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the conventional average local variances method(ALV),and assessment results are consistent with those of the subjective perceptual method.
