Applying Geographical Information System(GIS)in meteorology and climatology is a new trend since the latter 1990's.In this article, the authors construct a GIS-based Tropical Cyclone(TC)Path Query and Analysis System. In order to improve the query efficiency,a spatial data model of TC track, which based on ESRI's Shape data format,is designed. In this model, the TC database is established and a set of spatial query tools is implemented. For the purposes of providing more valuable reference TC track for meteorological professionals in TC forecast, the authors also propose a new concept of spatial similarity of tropical cyclone tracks, which extend the geographical similarity used in meteorology. With the concept of spatial similarity which defined by similarity coefficient, they define the similarity of historic TC track to the interest TC track,or the TC occurred in sea surface currently. Finally, the similar track query and analysis tools is designed and integrated in the system.
