Prevention of Cascading Failures Based on Time of Vegetation-Related Failure

Xianyong Xiao · East China Electric Power · 2012

The recent blackouts worldwide have driven researchers′ attention to the vegetation-related fault rule and its inherent timescale during the cascading failures. The dynamic behavior of line sag and the vegetation height are modeled. The time of vegetation-related failure triggered by the line power flow increase after the previous failure is calculated considering the specific physical circumstances and the height of the trees along the transmission corridor, aiming to warn the operators of the urgency of system crisis and prevent the blackouts due to the operators′ delay.WSCC-9 and IEEE-24 node standard testing system were simulated respectively, and the results show that this proposed method can identify the collapse sequences and the corresponding timescales in case of vegetation-related cascading failures, conducive to the prediction and prevention of cascading failures.
