A Fast Algorithm of H.264 Inter-Modes Decision

In this paper,a fast algorithm of inter-modes decision was proposed.After the motion estimation of P16x16 mode,the sum of absolute difference(SAD) distribution characteristics of sixteen 4x4 blocks was analyzed,and then a possible mode among P16x8,P8x16,and P8x8 was selected to perform the motion estimation based on the SAD,if P8x8 was chosen,after motion estimation of P8x8 was done,a possible mode among P4x8,P8x4,and P4x4 was selected used the same way.The simulation results on six video sequences with different characters show that,compared with the H.264 JM13.2 encoder,the proposed algorithm can reduce coding time by 59.72%while decreasing PSNR by 0.07dB and increasing bit rate by-1.22%on average.
