This paper describes application of the concepts of fractal geometry to analyze chaotic properties of different faults in power systems. An algorithm using the fractal number of phase voltages, phase currents and modular currents is presented for fault detection and phase selection. It meets the requirement of phase selection on a weak feedback side. The fault phases can be identified within 10 ms after faults. The results of EMTP simulations show the high accuracy of the proposed method.
