Avoidance and Overgeneralization —An Investigation of Acquisition of the Bǎ-Sentence Based on the HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus

This paper discusses HSK(advanced)examinee’s situation to learn the Bǎ (把)-sentence. The erroneous Bǎ-sentences collected from the HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus are divided into three categories: avoidance,overgeneralization and others. The analysis of the reasons why these errors had occur shows that the avoidance errors in Bǎ-sentences is not so serious as it was believed before,and they had not occur due to the learning strategy of avoidance,but do to the absence of counterpart in the mother tongues of the examinees,and that constitutes the main cause of the errors in using the Bǎ-sentence. After examining the relationship between avoidance and overgeneralization,the paper has put forward some suggestions on the strategies that can be employed in teaching the Bǎ-sentence.
