In order to ensure the stable and reliable power supply for lightning current monitoring device of transmission lines, we proposed a self-powered lightning current monitoring device based on electromagnetic induction. Power harvesting coils and signal coils are installed in the lightning current channel including transmission lines towers, lightning rods, and lightning arrester grounding wires. When the power harvesting unit is activated by lightning current, the peak value and its polarity will be sampled and stored by signal coils in the meantime. Through theoretical deduction and numerical analysis by the Saber software, we eventually determined the appropriate structure and respective parameters of power harvesting coils and signal coils such as the geometry dimension. Further experiments indicate that, via subsequent power adapting circuits, the power coils can support load steadily, and the lightning current sensor can linearly measure lightning currents within 10 ~200 kA.
