Research on Buffer Sizing for Media Streaming over TCP

Jinyao Yan · 2009

Since TCP is the dominant protocol in the Internet,it is reasonable to employ TCP for video streaming. While the use of TCP provides reliable video stream delivery,it is difficult to provide good quality of streaming video over TCP.The drawbacks of TCP can be mitigated to some extent through the use of receiver side buffering. The buffer size has to be large enough to ensure that video data is not lost. But if it is too large,it will cause a waste of source. In this paper,we consider the problem of how large the play-out buffer should be in order to achieve desired performance for video streaming over TCP.We analyze how buffer influents on the play-back stability and the real-time characteristics. We work out the relationship between the buffer size and the buffer under-run probability in different status.Simulations on buffer sizing have been carried out in NS2.
