Word Class,Syntactic Function and Style: A Comparative Study Based on Annotated Corpora
Liu Haita · Applied Linguistics · 2012
The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar, investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora. We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese, and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements. The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function. To be specific, most subjects are nouns in written Chinese, while pronouns in spoken Chinese. In addition,in spoken Chinese, many word classes can serve as attributives, and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.
