The application of universal trellis coded quantization to image coding

An image quantization method based on trellis coded modulation is presented. For the theory foundation of trellis coded quantization, trellis coded modulation technique and Viterbi algorithm are discussed. By studying trellis coded quantization, we found a problem about set partitioning step of this method. We solved this problem by using another set partitioning technique, forming universal trellis coded quantization. Experimental result of universal trellis coded quantization is presented and compared with uniform quantization .Performance of universal trellis coded quantization is quite competitive.
