Synthesis of (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)-trimethylammonium acetate

The title compound, used to produce cationic starch,is synthesized from trimethylamine , 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane and acetic acid.The factors of the influence, such as reaction temperature, reaction time and the ratio of the reaction compounds,on the yield and properties of the product are discussed, and the yield of the title compound is over 95% when the reaction time is 3 hours at 35～40 ℃,and the molar ratio of trimethylamine,1-chloro-2,3-expoxypropane and acetic acid is 1∶1∶1.
