A Fast Intra-Prediction Mode Selection Algorithm for 4×4 Block in AVS/H.264 Based on Prediction Frequency

In this paper,a new fast 4×4 intra-prediction mode selection algorithm is put forward. The character that different pixels have different frequency weight in different direction,together with smoothness and correlation of neighbor block,were taken into account to design three adaptive thresholds which were used for mode selection. Experiment results show that the new algorithm can decrease drastically complexity of current 4×4 intra-prediction while only increase a little code rate,and besides,the PSNR is almost unchanged,especially for high quality image.
