Study on Symbol Sharing Based on Common Integrated Symbol Editor

This paper concludes the principle and character of current four symbol sharing methods. The first one is data format transformation, which realizes the symbol sharing when CAD data are changed into other forms through exploding the block into basic geometries. The second one is symbol format transformation, which is turning one kind of symbol form into another one by special conversion program. The third one is TrueType symbol library. The last one is symbol corresponding table, which archives the symbol sharing by reconstructing a totally same symbol library as source one,and makes symbol code corresponding one-to-one,and then carries on symbols'display in the goal system. The above-mentioned four kinds of methods can all realize the symbol sharing more or less, but every one has its deficiency. The first mode will make the data no longer have symbol concept, and will also make the data file double and redouble. The second mode is very difficult to realize, and the workload is large. The third one can only solve the sharing problems of point symbol, but to the sharing of line and region symbol it is powerless. The last one is only a feint of symbol sharing, and not really settles the problem. So,the paper puts forward symbol sharing based on Common Integrated Symbol Editor (CISE) and symbol rendering and drawing components.User can design symbols in CISE,store the symbol in the symbol library, and utilize rendering and drawing components to realize the drawing of symbol on the maps of many kinds of GIS contexts. While GIS application system is developed in different environments (MapObjects,ArcMap,SuperMap,MapGIS,GeoStar, etc.),corresponding rendering and drawing components are called, through which common symbol library can been displayed same in different GIS maps and symbol information can been shared. In addition, the paper introduces symbol data arrangement, storage and index, and the features of CISE,analyzes symbol rendering and drawing components of SuperMapⅢ and symbol library engines.
