Design of H.264 Motion Estimation Hardware Accelerator

The H.264 motion estimation algorithm is optimized by analyzing typical motion estimation algorithm,and two motion estimation algorithms are proposed which are more convenient for hardware realization.Comparing these two algorithms with Full Search(FS),when the average reduction on the PSNR is only 0.45 dB and 0.67 dB,the calculation work can be reduced by 50% and 67.8% respectively.According to speed priority principle or resource priority principle,the hardware structure is designed,and the consumption of hardware resource,data bandwidth and processing speed are analyzed,then a hardware accelerator are designed.At last,the verification of H.264 motion estimation hardware accelerator on Xilinx Virtex-II PRO exploited board is given,and the verification results show that accelerator can correctly complete the motion estimation data processing functions.
