Very low bit rate software video encoder based on H.263

Based on baseline H 263 video coding, this paper studies some key technologies of software VLBR video encoder to increase its coding efficiency and to reduce its running time. Some refined coding methods, including Improved PB frames, Advanced Intra Coding and Advanced Prediction Mode, are used to improve the coding efficiency. To speed up coding computation, MMX technology and some algorithms, which reduce running time, are introduced. According to the experimental results, the scheme of software VLBR video encoder (10～ 12 kbit/s ) with real time characteristics is determined, by which the reconstructed picture quality is also good.
