Hierarchical clustering is a basic networking model for sensing layer of the Internet of things based on a large-scale wireless sensor network,a maintaining method for non-periodic,energy-efficient and dynamic clusters is proposed to solve the problem of numerous energy consumption resulted from the traditional periodic and whole-network re-clustering mechanism.Only changed clusters are re-clustered when the residual energy of their cluster heads is less or their nodes are compromised, and a scheme of integrated inner-clusters and inter-clusters maintaining method is applied to single or multi-hop network. The method is characteristic in non-periodic,local and dynamic response for the changed cluster(s)or node(s),its outstanding merit is able to largely improve the energy efficiency of sensor nodes in the sensing layer of the Internet of things.Simulation results imply that the proposed method can greatly prolong the lifetime of network compared with the traditional one, concretely, the average lifetime of network nodes keep under 100% active and may increase by nearly 9 times in our simulations than classic LEACH protocol.
