Expert System of QNPs for the Disambiguation of Pragmatic Interpretations

This article aims at establishing an expert system(ES) for pragmatic interpretations of quantified noun phrases(QNPs) in discourse.Based on expert systems built in Kuno et al.(1999) and Yang(2004),more valid experts are explored via observation about the behavior of QNPs in natural language databases.Votes attached on each expert are added up to make a tally,by which the optimal pragmatic interpretation in discourse is predicted.It turns out that our ES can successfully predict the pragmatic interpretations of 75% of the QNPs in discourse and that the tally distribution shows strong combined effects according to pragmatic interpretations.
