A Virtual Reality Desktop Environment for Mac OS X
Oskar Groth · 2016
The arrival of consumer oriented Virtual Reality headsets with high resolution displays and positional tracking has introduced new opportunities for computer interaction. This thesis explores the idea of using a Virtual Reality Head Mounted Display as a means of interacting with the desktop environment in Mac OS X. The goal was to develop a virtual desktop environment that can offer a better experience than using a traditional computer monitor. Features that could achieve this were conceptualized and then implemented through agile development. The end result was a working virtual desktop environment for Mac OS X El Capitan in the form of a runnable application. The application was then evaluated through user testing with conclusions about the potential for this type of virtual desktop environment to improve the productivity of the user. The application and its features were found to enable a virtual desktop environment that facilitated interaction with the OS. However, both the application and the hardware were found to lack the performance to enable a better experience than a traditional monitor. (Less)
