A Two-Tiered Database Cache Mechanism for a Clinician's Workstation
Isaac S. Kohane, David P. McCallie · PubMed Central · 1990
In a large, hospital-wide computing system involving hundreds of users and machines, the performance and data-integrity requirements of a Clinician Workstation (CWS) are difficult to meet with off-the-shelf database products alone. We describe a two-tiered cache mechanism that takes advantages of the particular characteristics of the data-usage and data-types in the CWS to provide improved performance to each user while decreasing the burden on the hospital network and central database servers. One part of the Clinician Profile in the CWS provides user reconfigurable default settings for the various performance characteristics of this cache mechanism.
