Moods and complementizers in Korean
Jun Mo Cho · 1995
This paper examines the functional projections MP (Mood Phrase) and CP in Korean. It is proposed that the head of CP be specified with two features [+/- N, +/-M]. A theory of feature percolation is proposed to explain the relation between the two projections. Support for these projections is provided by showing that their specifiers play a crucial role in the syntax of the language. The Spec/MP is argued to be the topic position upon the examination of extraction phenomenon in both gap and gapless topic constructions. The Spec/CP, coupled with the Spec/MP, is shown to be instrumental in explaining the various ECM phenomena in Korean.
