1955: An engineer uses an ingenious diagnostic system–a knitting needle stuck through a protractor–to try to determine whether a memory failure in the Ferranti "electronic brain" might perhaps be due to an unplugged cable or two. The Ferranti Mark 1 was the first commercially available general-purpose computer.
