Translation and the Internet

Frank Austermühl · 2014

This chapter discusses the use of terminology management systems and the various ways of managing terminology. It also explains how to use a specific TM system, Trados&s; MultiTerm &s;95 Plus. Database management systems (DBMS) such as MS Access are highly sophisticated programs that can be used for a variety of tasks such as storing and maintaining client addresses, managing orders and projects. Basically, translators using a DBMS benefit from the universality of these applications and their manifold functions. Hypermedia systems are based on the same technology used for web documents and it is very time-consuming in the input of terminological data. Dynamic data exchange (DDE) allows data to be exchanged between two applications that are running simultaneously under a common interface. MultiTerm allows people to perform what is known as a &s;fuzzy search&s;. When MultiTerm carries out a fuzzy search, it looks for all terms in the current index that has a certain similarity to the search criterion.
