Ensuring Home-based Rehabilitation Exercise by Using Kinect and Fuzzified Dynamic Time Warping Algorithm

Chuan‐Jun Su, Jing-Yen Huang, Shifeng Huang · 2012

Most formal rehabilitation facility is furnished in a hospital or center setting, which may not always be conveniently accessible for patients, especially those in geographically isolated areas. Home-based rehabilitation has potential to offer greater accessibility and increase uptake. In addition, rehabilitation exercises participated in a formal setting is sometimes insufficient for the patient's recovery. A constant rehabilitation exercise at home is required to expedite the recovery. One of the main issues is to provide technological support for making home-based rehabilitation offering similar outcomes to hospital-based rehabilitation with an occupational physician presented. This paper presents our development of a Kinect- based system for ensuring home-based rehabilitation (KEHR) using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm and fuzzy logic. The ultimate goal is to offer assistance for patients to conduct home-based rehabilitation without the presence of a physician and to avoid adverse events.
