Still Life, for string quartet and live electroacoustics

Still Life was the outcome of the AHRB-funded project Spatial Interaction in Composing Live Electroacoustic Music, which addressed issues of listener perception of interaction between acoustic performer and technological system; relation of the acoustic space to implied electroacoustic space; and aesthetic coherence when composing for instruments augmented by computer. The project aimed to use Emmerson's 'soundfield frames' to create and evaluate specific instances of spatial interaction in a live electroacoustic context. It also tried to assimilate elements of 'soundscape' and live interaction, developing a mode of expression which plays with audience perception of the music's siting within the performance space. Ultimately the work used horizontal ambisonic sound projection to create spatial interactions in surround sound alongside the live string quartet.
