Functional correctness has traditionally been the central goal of software design. But there are many other important aspects that designers must take into account such as performance, reliability, and security. Distribution and parallelism are two considerations that are gaining more importance due to the increasing availability and dependability of computer networks. This paper gives an overview of characteristics, execution models, and implementation support for such distributed systems. Finally, we consider the issue of designing distributed systems based on component building blocks. The paper is of a survey nature aimed at readers familiar with sequential software design.
