Ontologies: a technical of knowledge representation

Presented below the relevant aspects of the ontological engineering as an effective technique for the knowledge representation. Starting with concepts from the semantic web and the role of the ontologies inside the architecture of the semantic web; we explore the aspects of the ontology development methodologies, as well as, exposed many software tools required for access to the knowledge stored inside these ontologies. Some case studies from ontologic representation of Colombian flora and fauna are used in order to prove the tools mentioned before, showing favorable results for the information retrieval from these ontologies.
