Sampling from Card Files

Abraham Bookstein · The Library Quarterly · 1983

Much of library research involves samples based on card files, yet little attention has been given to the validity of the methods by which cards are selected. This paper describes a number of difficulties that commonly occur when such samples are taken and suggests means of ameliorating these difficulties. Particular attention is given to a sampling technique first suggested by Fussler in 1961; this technique is described and its performance analyzed.
