Open Source in Tribology: Analyzing and Visualizing Tribology Data with R

Tribology studies involve data analysis and presenting these data in an understandable form. Although material test devices are generating greater amounts of data as sensor technologies improve, there is a lack of data analysis tools available for tribology tests. Typically, spreadsheet or plotting software packages designed for other fields are used for analysis. This increases analysis time and is prone to errors. Although open source software packages such as R are increasingly used in many fields, these are not widely accepted for engineering applications. In this article, we present a new package for R, trib, which illustrates that R can be efficiently used for engineering analysis. The trib package provides functions for analyzing and plotting Pin-on-Disk and Ball-on-Disk data. These functions include determination of valleys and plotting functions.
