Referencing Your Sources

American Society of Civil Engineers eBooks · 2004

Formal documents that cite source material need to use either a bibliography or a full referencing system. A Bibliography section—made up of a list of the sources used in the preparation of the document, together with others of interest—is the form that is usually used in the types of formal reports produced by engineering organizations. Journal and conference papers, however, demand the use of a full referencing system. In this, the sources are cited throughout the document, and the full details of each are listed in a section called List of References or References. All of these systems are governed by traditional conventions. The aim of this chapter is to give full details while assuming no previous knowledge.
