Summary Surface structures are quite complicated in the loess tableland in western China. The near surface survey and modeling have been the most critical factors that affect the quality of seismic data imaging. On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of near surface structure and combining with the advantages of different modeling methods, a workflow has been established to generate the near surface model and compute the datum statics. First we follow the consistency principle of picking up the first-breaks to improve its quality. Second, a depth correction was made to replace the previous up-hole time correction. Then a joint inversion of refraction and tomography is used to establish the near surface model, which is aimed to solve the middle-long wavelength statics. Finally, a high efficient refraction residual statics was developed to solve the large residual statics. As a result, the accuracy of near surface and datum statics was much improved. This method has a better solution to near surface model and statics in huge thick loess tableland areas, and improved the quality of seismic data imaging.
