An Interview with Charles Dodge

Ed M. Thieberger, Charles Richards Dodge · Computer Music Journal · 1995

Dodge: There were problems, but there were tremendous opportunities too. We were very lucky to have access to Bell Telephone Laboratories (Bell Labs, now AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories) during the days before the telephone company got serious. We could really tap into that technology and we got a tremendous amount of support. In fact, the earliest work in computer music at Princeton was made possible by the donation to the university by Bell Labs of the digital-to-analog conversion system. One year-the year that I was doing my doctorate at Columbia-I was teaching at Princeton and finishing my DMA at Columbia. I drove something like 25,000 miles between Columbia, Princeton, and Bell Labs. The longest leg of that trip is about 35 miles. I made several trips every day in the car. Thieberger: I understand you were affiliated principally with Columbia at first, although you did some work at Princeton.
